Tracking Lot and Serial Numbers
According to FDA requirements, a manufacturer of heart pacemakers must track the lot number and serial number of each pacemaker from the patient to the supplier and ultimately back to the manufacturer. This particular manufacturer was keeping hand written logs. Errors were frequent. To prevent stray barcode labels from being used and mislabeled on the product, the manufacturer wanted to print on-demand as they needed the labels.
Avery Dennison recommended the manufacturer instal an inventory label system utilizing "piggyback" labels with a Monarch® 9855™ printer. Piggyback labels have a double adhesive. This unique inventory label allows the top layer with the information to be removed and reapplied. All lot number and serial number data is controlled by the manufacturer's host system and is directly sent to the barcode label printer. The piggyback inventory labels are printed with a Code 39 barcode and human readable information for both the lot number and serial number. In addition, a short description of the model is also printed. At final inspection, the on-demand piggyback inventory label is applied to the pacemaker case. The barcode printed on the inventory label is scanned before shipping to automatically update inventory records. When the case is received, the piggyback inventory label is removed and applied to the receiving paperwork, thus leaving physical documentation. The barcode label is also scanned to update the inventory records.
