Tracking Lot and Serial Numbers
According to FDA requirements, a manufacturer of heart pacemakers must track the lot number and serial number of each pacemaker from the patient to the supplier and ultimately back to the manufacturer. This particular Customer was keeping hand written logs. Errors were frequent. To prevent stray labels from being used and mislabeled on the product, the manufacturer wanted to print on-demand as they needed the labels.
Avery Dennison recommended the Customer install a piggyback labeling system with a Monarch® 9855™ printer. Piggyback labels have a double adhesive. This unique label allows the top layer with the information to be removed and reapplied. All lot number and serial number data is controlled by the Customer’s host system and is directly sent to the printer. The piggyback labels are printed with a Code 39 bar code and human readable information for both the lot number and serial number. In addition, a short description of the model is also printed. At final inspection, the on-demand piggyback label is applied to the pacemaker case. The bar code printed on the label is scanned before shipping to automatically update inventory records. When the case is received, the piggyback label is removed and applied to the receiving paperwork, thus leaving physical documentation. The bar code label is also scanned to update the inventory records.
